카바신전

사우디아라비아 메카의 마스지드 알 하람(대사원) 중앙에 위치한 카바 신전은 전 세계 무슬림의 기도의 방향이자 이슬람에서 가장 신성시되는 성지다. 카바는 아랍어로 '정육면체'를 뜻하며 높이 약 15m의 석조 건축물로 이슬람에서 '알라의 집'으로 여겨지며 무슬림은 전 세계 어디서든 카바를 향해 기도한다. 이슬람 전통에 따르면 예언자 아브라함과 그의 아들 이스마일이 신의 명령에 따라 처음 건립했으며 이후 여러 차례 재건되었다고 한다. 신전의 동쪽 모서리에 박혀 있는 검은 돌은 천사 가브리엘이 아브라함에게 전달했다고 전해지며 순례자들은 이 돌에 입을 맞추거나 손을 흔들어 경의를 표한다. 신전 바로 옆 유리 상자 안에는 이브라힘이 카바를 지을 때 딛고 섰던 발자국이 남은 돌이 보관되어 있다.

Kaaba
