폼페이 유적

79년 8월 24일 베수비오 산 분화로 인근의 헤르쿨라네움 등과 함께 화산재와 분석에 묻혀 파괴되었다. 역사에 퇴장했던 폼페이가 다시 역사에 등장한 것은 1592년이었다. 폼페이 위를 가로지르는 운하를 건설하는 과정에서 건물과 회화 작품들이 발견되었던 것이다. 1861년 이탈리아가 통일되면서 폼페이의 모습이 확연히 드러나기 시작했다.그후에도 폼페이 발굴은 계속되어 현재는 도시의 약 4/5가 모습을 드러낸 상태이다. 이곳에서 나온 많은 출토품들은 현재 나폴리 미술관에 소장되어 있다.

화산 폭발로 멸망한 도시

79년 8월 24일 정오. 이탈리아 남부 나폴리 연안에 우뚝 솟아 있는 베수비오 화산이 돌연 폭발하는 놀라운 일이 일어났다. 거대한 폭발과 함께 검은 구름이 분출되면서 화산이 분화하기 시작했던 것이다. 화산은 엄청난 양의 화산재와 화산분출물을 뿜어내면서 인근 도시로 쏟아져내렸다. 도시는 완전히 파묻혀버리고 말았고 폼페이는 역사 속으로 사라지고 말았던 것이다.
