모뉴먼트밸리

모뉴먼트 밸리는 미국 애리조나주와 유타주 경계에 걸쳐 있는 광활한 사막 지대로 붉은 사암으로 이루어진 거대한 바위 기둥과 메사가 솟아 있는 풍경으로 세계적으로 유명하다. 이곳은 나바호족 자치구 안에 위치해 있어 행정적으로는 국립공원이 아니라 나바호 네이션이 관리하는 보호구역이며, 나바호 문화와 자연 경관이 함께 어우러진 공간이다. 모뉴먼트 밸리의 독특한 지형은 오랜 세월 동안의 침식 작용으로 형성되었고, 서부 개척 시대를 배경으로 한 영화와 광고, 사진에 자주 등장하면서 미국 서부의 상징적 이미지로 자리 잡았다. 끝없이 펼쳐진 붉은 대지와 고요한 바위 기둥들은 인간이 자연 앞에서 느끼는 경외감을 강하게 불러일으키며, 오늘날에도 미국 서부 풍경을 대표하는 장소다.

Monument Valley

Monument Valley is a region of the Colorado Plateau characterized by a cluster of sandstone buttes, with the largest reaching 300m above the valley floor. The most famous butte formations are located in northeastern Arizona along the Utah–Arizona state line. The valley is considered sacred by the Navajo Nation, the Native American people within whose reservation it lies. Monument Valley has been featured in many forms of media since the 1930s. Famed director John Ford used the location for a number of his Westerns. Film critic Keith Phipps wrote that "its five square miles have defined what decades of moviegoers think of when they imagine the American West".
