파벨라

브라질의 슬럼가를 말한다. 지방도시는 말할 것도 없고, 대도시인 상파울루나 리우데자네이루에 흔하다. 생성 계기는 대한민국의 달동네와 비슷하게 도시로 온 농민들이 옹기종기 모이면서 형성되었지만 빈부격차 문제와 인종 문제, 교육 문제, 1970년대~1990년대의 경제난에다 마약, 그리고 이를 유통하는 범죄조직인 마약 카르텔의 확산까지 겹치며 도저히 사람이 살 수 없는 곳이 되었다. 사실상 마약 카르텔 혹은 경찰 민병대가 장악한 곳으로, 브라질 정부의 통제가 전혀 닿지 않는다.

Favela

Favela is an umbrella name for several types of working-class neighborhoods in Brazil. The term was first used in the Providência neighborhood in the center of Rio de Janeiro in the late 19th century, which was built by soldiers who had lived under the favela trees in Bahia and had nowhere to live following the Canudos War. Some of the first settlements were called bairros africanos. Over the years, many former enslaved Africans moved in
