시기리야 고대 도시

시기리야는 스리랑카 중부에 있는 고대 암석 요새·궁전 유적으로 스리랑카를 대표하는 역사·건축 명소 중 하나다. '사자 바위'라는 뜻으로 5세기 후반(약 477~495년) 스리랑카의 왕 카샤파 1세가 세운 거대 요새이자 궁전으로 그는 왕위를 차지한 뒤 자신을 보호하기 위해 이 거대한 암석을 중심으로 복합적인 왕궁 도시를 지었다. 왕이 사망한 뒤에는 불교 수도원으로 쓰이기도 했으며, 중세 이후 점차 폐허가 되었으나 수세기 동안 지역 주민들에게 기억되었다가 19세기 이후 본격적으로 발굴·연구되었다.

Ancient City of Sigiriya

The ruins of the capital built by the parricidal King Kassapa I (477–95) lie on the steep slopes and at the summit of a granite peak standing some 180m high (the 'Lion's Rock). A series of galleries and staircases emerging from the mouth of a gigantic lion constructed of bricks and plaster provide access to the site.
