몽생미셸

몽생미셸은 8세기 초, 아브랑슈의 주교 오베르가 꿈속에서 대천사 미카엘의 계시를 받고 바위섬 위에 작은 성당을 지으면서 시작되었다. 초기에는 소박한 예배당이었으나, 시간이 흐르며 로마네스크와 고딕 양식이 절묘하게 조화된 거대한 수도원으로 확장되었고, 중세 시대에는 유럽에서 가장 중요한 가톨릭 성지 중 하나로 자리매김했다. 지리적으로는 조수 간만의 차가 매우 큰 만에 위치하여, 밀물 때는 바다 위에 홀로 떠 있는 고립된 섬이 되고 썰물 때는 육지와 연결되는 신비로운 경관을 연출한다. 이러한 독특한 지형 덕분에 백년전쟁 당시에는 난공불락의 요새 역할을 수행했으며, 프랑스 혁명기에는 한때 감옥으로 사용되는 등 파란만장한 세월을 견뎌왔다. 오늘날에는 천 년의 세월을 간직한 수도원과 그 아래 좁은 골목길을 따라 늘어선 중세풍의 마을이 어우러져, 마치 동화 속 한 장면 같은 분위기를 자아내며 방문객들에게 잊지 못할 감동을 선사한다.

Mont-Saint-Michel

Perched on a rocky islet in the midst of vast sandbanks exposed to powerful tides between Normandy and Brittany stand the 'Wonder of the West', a Gothic-style Benedictine abbey dedicated to the archangel St Michael, and the village that grew up in the shadow of its great walls. Built between the 11th and 16th centuries, the abbey is a technical and artistic tour de force, having had to adapt to the problems posed by this unique natural site.
