푸우이키 묘지

하와이 오아후섬 북쪽 와이알루아에 위치한 푸우이키 묘지는 한국인들에게 매우 특별하고 가슴 아픈 역사를 간직한 곳으로 100여 년 전 하와이 사탕수수 농장으로 건너온 초기 한인 이민 선조들의 애환과 삶이 고스란히 묻어 있는 역사적 성지다. 이곳에는 과거 와이알루아 사탕수수 농장에서 고된 노동을 견디며 살았던 한인 1세대 노동자들과 그 가족 약 40~60여 명이 잠들어 있습니다. 2003년, 한인 이민 100주년을 기념하여 이곳에 추모비가 세워졌습니다. 사탕수수밭에서 저고리를 풀어헤친 채 하늘을 응시하는 농부의 모습이 형상화되어 있으며, 이는 척박한 땅에서 솟구치는 강한 의지를 상징한다.

Korean immigration to Hawaii

The very first large group of Korean immigrants arrived in the United States was in the year 1903 on January 13. The Korean Empire had issued its first English-language passports to these immigrants the previous year. They travelled on the RMS Gaelic and landed in Hawaii. The passengers were a diverse group with various ages and backgrounds. Among the group were fifty-six men recruited as labourers for sugarcane plantations located on various islands in the Territory of Hawaii, as well as twenty-one women and twenty-five children. Within two years of the first arrival of Korean immigrants, the number of Koreans who had migrated to Hawaii had grown to more than 7,000.
