킨카쿠지
1397년 무로마치 막부의 제3대 쇼군 아시카가 요시미쓰가 이곳을 사들여 화려한 별장 '키타야마도노'를 세웠다. 금각 누각은 1399년에 건립되었고, 요시미쓰 사후 그의 유언에 따라 1408년 절로 바뀌어 록온지라 이름붙여졌다. 이후 15세기 오닌의 난 등 여러 혼란에서도 중심 누각은 살아남았지만, 1950년, 사찰에 있던 젊은 승려의 방화로 인해 전소되는 비극을 겪었다. 이 사건은 일본의 소설가 미시마 유키오의 소설 《금각사》의 소재가 되어 유명해지기도 했다. 현재의 건물은 1955년에 원래의 모습대로 재건된 것이며, 1987년에는 금박을 다시 입혀 더욱 화려한 모습을 갖추게 되었다.
Kinkakuji
Kinkakuji is a Zen Buddhist temple in Kyoto, Japan. It is one of the most popular buildings in Kyoto, attracting many visitors annually. It is designated as a National Special Historic Site, a National Special Landscape and is one of 17 locations making up the Historic Monuments of Ancient Kyoto which are World Heritage Sites. Kinkaku-ji was ranked the No. 85 Most Holy Place on Earth by religious leaders, writers and scholars in the Patheos multi-faith religion project Sacred Spaces: The 100 Most Holy Places on Earth.
