점박이물범

점박이물범은 체온조절, 호흡, 체력 회복 등을 위해 주기적으로 물 밖 에 나와 바위 등에서 휴식을 취해야 하는데, 그동안 백령도 바다에서 휴식 공간으로 활용되 던 물범바위는 자리가 좁아 물범들이 자리다툼을 벌이 는 등 휴식을 취하는 데 어려움이 있었다. 이에 해양수산부는 선착장 등 다양한 인공시설을 물범 휴식공간으로 활용하는 해외 사례에 착안하여, 작년 9월 부터 11월까지 백령도 인근 하늬 바다에 섬 형태의 인공쉼터 ( 350㎡, 길이 20m × 폭17.5m) 를 조성하였다. 인공쉼터의 수면아래 쪽은 어초의 기능도 담당하여 쥐노래미, 조피볼락 등 물고기들의 서식처로 활용될 것으로 기대된다.

Spotted Seal

The spotted seal is a member of the family Phocidae, and is considered a "true seal". It inhabits ice floes and waters of the north Pacific Ocean and adjacent seas. It is primarily found along the continental shelf of the Beaufort, Chukchi, Bering and Okhotsk Seas[3] and south to the northern Yellow Sea and it migrates south as far as northern Huanghai and the western Sea of Japan. It is also found in Alaska from the southeastern Bristol Bay to Demarcation Point during the ice-free seasons of summer and autumn when spotted seals mate and have pups.
