독립협회 (1896)
독립협회는 1896년 서재필, 윤치호, 이상재, 이완용 등 개화파 인사들이 설립한 국민 계몽 단체로, 조선이 자주독립 국가로 나아가도록 하기 위해 만들어졌다. 이들은 민권 신장(국민의 권리 확대)과 자주독립, 입헌정치 실현을 목표로 삼았다. 대표적인 활동으로는 <독립신문> 발행, 독립문 건립, 그리고 만민공동회 개최가 있으며 만민공동회에서는 백성들이 직접 모여 정치 개혁과 외세 배척을 주장, 당시로서는 매우 혁신적인 민중 참여 정치운동을 펼쳤다. 그러나 점차 보수 세력과 외세(특히 러시아) 와의 반발이 커지면서 정부는 독립협회를 위험한 단체로 몰아 1898년에 해산시켰다.
Independence Club (1896)
The Independence Association was founded through the initiative of Philip Jaisohn (Seo Jae-pil) on July 2, 1896. At its founding it was recognized by the Korean Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Despite some remarkable achievements, by the late nineteenth century Korea found itself wholly unable to resist, or even properly comprehend the encroachments of foreign powers. Japan's recent victory over China had both removed the Chinese from the peninsula and exacted an acknowledgment of Korean independence, but the country's independence was fragile, with Japan, Russia, and other powers vying for influence.
