전태일 (全泰壹, 1948-1970)

전태일은 청년 시절부터 서울 평화시장의 봉제공장에서 재단사로 일하며 노동환경의 심각한 문제를 직접 겪었다. 당시 시다(보조 노동자)들은 대부분 10대 소녀들이었고, 하루 14~16시간 넘게 일하면서도 제대로 된 임금이나 식사, 안전장치조차 보장받지 못했다. 전태일은 이런 현실을 바꾸기 위해 노동청에 진정을 넣고, 노동법을 공부하며 동료들의 권리를 지키고자 노력했다. 그는 동료들과 함께 노동조건 개선을 요구했지만, 현실은 쉽게 바뀌지 않았다. 결국 1970년 11월 13일, 평화시장 앞에서 "근로기준법을 준수하라!", "우리는 기계가 아니다!", "내 죽음을 헛되이 하지 말라!"고 외치며 온몸에 석유를 뿌리고 분신하는 극단적인 선택을 하며 열악한 노동자의 현실을 세상에 강하게 알렸다. 전태일의 죽음은 한국 사회에 큰 충격을 주었고, 이를 계기로 노동 환경 개선 요구가 전국적으로 확산되었다. 이후 민주노조 운동, 노동기본권 개선, 근로기준법 정비 등 큰 변화가 이어졌으며, 그는 한국 현대사의 중요한 전환점을 만든 인물이며 오늘날에도 전태일 기념관, 추모제, 다큐멘터리와 책 등을 통해 그의 정신이 계승되고 있다.

Jeon Taeil (1948-1970)

Jeon Tae-il was a South Korean sewing worker and workers' rights activist who committed suicide by burning himself to death at the age of 22 in protest at the poor working conditions of South Korean factories. His death brought attention to the substandard labor conditions and helped the formation of labor union movement in South Korea.

전태일기념관

서울시는 청년 전태일이 활동했고 분신 항거로 새로운 시대를 열었던 청계천에 아름다운청년 전태일기념관을 세웠다. 전태일을 따르며 전태일처럼 살기로 하는 모든 분들의 염원이었다. 1981년 전태일기념관건립추진위원회가 발족하여 전태일 평전을 펴내면서 오늘에 이르도록 꿈을 키워왔다. 많은 어려움이 있었지만 함께 꾼 꿈이었기에 현실이 됐다.

Jeon Tae-il Memorial Hall

Having been built by the Seoul city government, the Jeon Tae-il Memorial Hall is a labor complex facility erected to illuminate upon the historical significance of Jeon Tae-il, whose self-sacrifice served as a pivotal point in time in the history of the Korean labor movement. The young man gave everything he had to create a world that centered itself around the mentality that workers are people that have the right to live, work, and study in good health. In order to help bring Jeon Tae-il's dream into fruition, the hall urges unity between the labor force, the youth of the country, and the public, brought together around the ideals of love and solidarity.
