키르쿠스 막시무스 (대전차경기장)

키르쿠스 막시무스는 이탈리아 팔라티노 언덕과 아벤티노 언덕 사이에 움푹 파인 기원전 600년경에 목재로 만들어진 거대한 타원형 광장으로 고대 로마 제국에서 가장 큰 전차 경기장이었다. 영화 벤허의 대전차 경기 장면을 촬영하기도 하였다. 키르쿠스 막시무스는 라틴어로 '대형 경기장(또는 광장)'을 의미한다. 2006년 월드컵에서 이탈리아가 우승한 날에는 이곳에서 밤새도록 축제가 열리기도 하였다.

Circus Maximus

The Circus Maximus is an ancient Roman chariot-racing stadium and mass entertainment venue located in Rome, Italy. Situated in the valley between the Aventine and Palatine Hills, it was the first and largest stadium in ancient Rome and its later Empire. It measured 621m in length and 118min width and could accommodate over 150,000 spectators. In its fully developed form, it became the model for circuses throughout the Roman Empire. The site is now a public park.
