숙종 (1661-1720)

13살의 어린 나이로 조선의 임금으로 즉위하였으나, 속깊은 그는 수렴청정을 받지 않고 그 어린나이에 누구 간섭없이 직접 나라를 통치하였다. 숙종의 치세는 크고 작은 정치 논쟁으로 하루도 조용한 날이 없었다. 숙종은 용모가 출중한 숙원 장씨를 총애하여, 1688년 소의로 승격시켰다. 이때 인현왕후가 결혼한 지 6년이 넘도록 아이를 낳지 못하자 후궁인 희빈이 낳은 왕자 윤(昀)을 원자로 책봉하는 문제로 남인과 서인이 심하게 대립하였다.

Sukjong (1661-1720)

In the early years of Sukjong's reign, the Southern faction and Western faction clashed over the Royal Funeral Dispute, a seemingly minor issue regarding the mourning period for Queen Insun. The Southern faction claimed that the mourning period should last one year while the Western faction argued for a nine-month mourning period. A one-year mourning period meant that Hyojong of Joseon was considered the eldest son while 9-month period would suggest that Hyojong was considered not the eldest son, following the rules that governed the yangban class.
