현장 (602-664)

현장은 당나라 초기의 고승이자 번역가로 흔히 현장삼장이라 한다. 10세 때 형을 따라 낙양의 정토사에서 불경을 공부하다가 13세에 승적에 이름을 올려 현장이라는 법명을 얻게 되었다. 그를 부르는 또 다른 명칭은 삼장법사인데, 삼장이란 명칭은 경장 · 율장 · 논장에 능하여 얻게 된 별칭이다.

Xuanzang (602-664)

Xuanzang was a Chinese Buddhist monk, scholar, traveller, and translator who travelled to India in the seventh century and described the interaction between Chinese Buddhism and Indian Buddhism during the early Tang dynasty. Born in what is now Henan province around 602, from boyhood he took to reading religious books, including the Chinese classics and the writings of ancient sages.
