카레즈

카레스는 중국의 동서를 횡단하는 만리장성, 남북을 잇는 대운하와 함께 고대의 3대 공청(공사) 중 하나로 꼽히는 수리시설이다. 2000년 전의 한나라 때 이미 처음으로 시작되어 그 후인 수나라 실크로드를 따라 발전하여 중앙아시아까지 그 영향을 미쳤다. 카레스는 지하수를 지면으로 끌어올린 방법으로 만든 수로로서 통계에 따르면, 투루판분지에 카레스이 1,237이나 된다고 한다. 그 중 실제로 이용되고 있는 것은 853개이며 총 길이는 5,000킬로미터를 넘는다. 이는 황하와 비슷한 길이로 세계 최장의 인공수로라고 한다.

Turpan Water System

The Turpan water system or Turfan water system in Turpan, located in the Turpan Depression, Xinjiang, China, is a vertical tunnel system adapted by the Turpan people. The word karez means "well" in the local Uyghur language. Turpan has the Turpan Water Museum dedicated to demonstrating its karez water system, as well as exhibiting other historical artifacts.
