두리안

두리안은 아욱과 두리안속(Durio)의 상록교목과 그 열매이다. 생물학적으로 30종이 구분되어 있으며 모든 종의 원산지가 동남아시아인 열대 과일이다. 최소 9종이 식용 열매를 맺는다. 두리안 1종의 열매가 전 세계의 시장에서 찾아볼 수 있는 두리안이며, 다른 종의 열매들은 원산지 지역에서 구할 수 있다. 두리안 열매의 특징으로는 크기와 매우 독특하여 유일무이한 향, 수많은 가시로 뒤덮인 껍질 등이 꼽힌다. 이름은 말레이시아어로 '가시'를 뜻하는 두리에서 왔다.

Durian

The durian is the edible fruit of several tree species belonging to the genus Durio. There are 30 recognised Durio species, at least nine of which produce edible fruit. Durio zibethinus, native to Borneo and Sumatra, is the only species available in the international market. It has over 300 named varieties in Thailand and 100 in Malaysia, as of 1987. Other species are sold in their local regions. Durians are commonly associated with Southeast Asian cuisine, especially in Indonesia, Malaysia, Singapore, Thailand, Cambodia, Philippines, Bangladesh and Vietnam.
