스카치 위스키

스카치 위스키(Scotch Whisky)는 영국 북부에 있는 스코틀랜드에서 생산되는 위스키를 말한다. 맥아(malt, 발아된 보리) 및 다른 곡식들을 이용하여 발효시켜 증류한 뒤 주로 셰리나 버번 위스키를 숙성했던 오크통에서 숙성하여 만든다. 숙성에 사용하는 통의 크기는 천차만별이고, 최근엔 각종 와인이나 럼 등을 숙성했던 오크통을 가져와서 쓰거나 아예 새 오크통으로 숙성을 시키는 시도를 하기도 한다. 일반적인 스카치 위스키는 새 오크통을 쓰지 않는데 그 이유는 새 오크통으로 숙성하는 버번위스키 종류와 비교해보면 어느 정도 이해가 될 것이다.

Scotch Whisky

Scotch whisky often simply called whisky or Scotch) is malt whisky or grain whisky (or a blend of the two), made in Scotland. All Scotch whisky was originally made from malted barley. Commercial distilleries began introducing whisky made from wheat and rye in the late 18th century. As of 2022, there were 141 whisky distilleries operating in Scotland.
