병인양요 (1866.9.18, 인천 강화도)

병인양요는 1866년에 흥선대원군의 천주교 탄압인 병인박해를 구실로 삼아 외교적 보호를 명분으로 하여 프랑스가 일으킨 전쟁이다. 로즈 제독이 이끄는 프랑스 함대 7척이 강화도를 점령하고 프랑스 신부를 살해한 자에 대한 처벌과 통상조약 체결을 요구했다.

French Campaign Against Korea (1866.9.18)

The French campaign against Korea was an 1866 punitive expedition undertaken by the Second French Empire in retaliation for the earlier Korean execution of seven French Catholic missionaries. The encounter over Ganghwa Island lasted nearly six weeks. The result was a French retreat and a check on French influence in the region.[3] The encounter also confirmed Korea in its isolationism for another decade, until Japan forced it to open up to trade in 1876 through the Treaty of Ganghwa.
