차이나타운

차이나타운은 1883년 인천항 개항 이후 1884년 청국의 조계지가 설정되면서 중국 상인들이 모여 살고 무역 활동을 하면서 만들어진 것이 차이나타운의 시작이다. 화교들이 정착하여 상업 활동을 펼치고 생활 터전으로 이곳은 100년이 넘는 시간 동안 고유의 문화와 이국적인 풍경을 간직해 왔다. 마을 입구에 들어서면 붉은색 대문 형태의 패루를 비롯하여 화려하고 독특한 중화권 양식의 건축물과 거리 곳곳을 밝히는 전통 홍등을 볼 수 있다. 이곳은 한국식 짜장면이 처음 탄생한 발상지로도 널리 알려져 있으며, 옛 공화춘 건물을 활용한 짜장면 박물관을 통해 짜장면의 역사와 화교의 삶의 궤적을 둘러볼 수 있다. 이 외에도 월병과 공갈빵 등 다채로운 중국식 주전부리와 음식을 맛볼 수 있는 상점이 줄지어 서 있다. 또한 인근의 삼국지·초한지 벽화거리와 자유공원, 청국 조계지 계단 등 다양한 역사 탐방로가 이어져 있어 한국 근현대사의 숨결을 함께 느껴볼 수 있다.

China Town

As one approaches nearer to Chinatown Street, one is met with a Chinese street that anyone can reckon. Passing along the lofty Pailou and walking for about 300 meters up the slope, the street becomes divided into a T-shape. The surrounding shops make you feel that you are somewhere in China. The red signage and red lanterns hang out, and the restaurants and the displayed products are all in the Chinese style. This place is Chinatown – a place that is decorated magnificently and offers many entertainments and foods.
