유관순 (1902.12.16-1920.9.28)
천안 출신으로 이화학당(이화여자고등학교) 재학 중이던 1919년 3·1운동 때 서울에서 독립 만세 시위에 참여했다. 이후 고향으로 돌아와 4월 1일 아우내 장터 만세운동을 주도하며 수천 명의 군중과 함께 "대한독립 만세"를 외쳤다. 이 과정에서 일본 헌병대가 발포해 많은 민중이 희생되었고 유관순의 부모도 현장에서 순국했다. 그녀는 체포되어 서대문형무소에 투옥되었지만, 감옥에서도 항일정신을 굽히지 않고 만세를 외쳤으며, 고문과 가혹행위 속에서도 끝까지 굴복하지 않았다. 그녀는 결국 1920년 9월 28일, 18세의 나이로 옥중 순국했다.
Ryu Gwansun (1902-1920)
Yu Gwan-sun was an organizer in what would come to be known as the March 1st Movement against Imperial Japanese colonial rule of Korea in South Chungcheong. The March 1st Movement was considered a peaceful demonstration by the Korean people against Japanese rule. Yu Gwan-sun became one of the most well-known participants in this movement, and eventually, a symbol of Korea's fight for independence.
