미켈란젤로 디 로도비코 부오나로티 시모니는 르네상스 시대 이탈리아의 대표적 조각가, 건축가, 화가, 그리고 시인이었다. 미켈란젤로는 88세인 1564 년 로마에서 사망했다.산타 크로체 교회 내부 지하에는 미켈란젤로, 갈릴레오 갈릴레이, 마키아벨리 등 피렌체 출신 유명 인사의 무덤이 있다.

Sistine Chapel ceiling

The Sistine Chapel ceiling, painted by Michelangelo between 1508 and 1512, is a cornerstone work of High Renaissance art. The ceiling is that of the Sistine Chapel, the large papal chapel built within the Vatican between 1477 and 1480 by Pope Sixtus IV, for whom the chapel is named. It was painted at the commission of Pope Julius II. The chapel is the location for papal conclaves and many other important services.

최후의 심판

1533년에 교황 클레멘스 7세의 명으로 시스티나 경당에 그려진 벽화로, 사코 디 로마를 비롯한 재난의 연속에 대한 분노의 감정을 달래기 위한 것이었다. 1534년 교황의 선종으로 이 작업은 일단 중지되었으나 클레멘스 7세의 뒤를 이어 교황이 된 바오로 3세가 다시 이 작업을 의뢰함으로써 결국 1541년에 면적 완성되었다.

The Last Judgment (Michelangelo)

The Last Judgment is a fresco by the Italian Renaissance painter Michelangelo covering the whole altar wall of the Sistine Chapel in Vatican City. It is a depiction of the Second Coming of Christ and the final and eternal judgment by God of all humanity. The souls of humans rise and descend to their fates, as judged by Christ who is surrounded by prominent saints.

피에타

피에타(1498-1499)는 현재 바티칸 시국의 성 베드로 대성전에 보관되어 있는 르네상스 시대 조각 예술의 대표적인 명작품이다. 그의 많은 피에타 상 중에서 최초의 것으로, 당시 로마에 체류 중이었던 프랑스 추기경 장 드 빌레르의 의뢰로 만든 것이었다. 이 유명한 작품은 십자가에 매달려 죽은 후에 어머니인 성모 마리아의 무릎에 놓여진 예수 그리스도의 시신을 묘사한 것이다. 미켈란젤로의 피에타는 고전적인 아름다움을 강조한 르네상스 시대 당시의 이상과 자연주의의 균형을 이룸으로써 예술학적으로 매우 중요한 작품이다. 또한, 이 피에타상은 유일하게 미켈란젤로가 직접 자신의 이름을 새긴 작품이기도 하다.

Pieta

Pieta (1498–1499) is a work of Renaissance sculpture by Michelangelo Buonarroti, housed in St. Peter's Basilica, Vatican City. It is the first of a number of works of the same theme by the artist. The statue was commissioned for the French Cardinal Jean de Bilhères, who was a representative in Rome. The sculpture, in Carrara marble, was made for the cardinal's funeral monument, but was moved to its current location, the first chapel on the right as one enters the basilica, in the 18th century. It is the only piece Michelangelo ever signed.
