경극

경극은 중국의 청나라 때 베이징에서 본격적으로 형성되어 19세기 무렵 하나의 양식으로 자리 잡은 중국을 대표하는 전통 공연 예술이다. 노래, 대사, 동작, 무술이 결합된 종합 예술로, 2010년 유네스코 인류무형문화유산으로 등정되었다. 경극은 배역의 성격에 따라 분장과 창법이 엄격히 구분된다.
생(生)은 남성 주인공. 나이에 따라 노생(노인), 소생(청년), 무생(무인)으로 나뉜다.
단(旦)은 여성 역할. 과거에는 여자가 무대에 설 수 없어 남자가 여장(가수)을 하기도 했다. (영화 패왕별희의 장국영 역할)
정(凈)은 '화검'이라고도 하며, 얼굴에 화려한 색칠을 한 성격 강한 남성 역할로 장군, 신선, 악당 등이다.
축(丑) 어릿광대 역할로 코 주위를 하얗게 칠하며, 재치 있는 대사로 분위기를 띄운다.

Peking opera

Peking opera, or Beijing opera, is the most dominant form of Chinese opera which combines music, vocal performance, mime, dance and acrobatics. It arose in Beijing in the mid-Qing dynasty and became fully developed and recognized by the mid-19th century. The form was extremely popular in the Qing court and has come to be regarded as one of the cultural treasures of China. Major performance troupes are based in Beijing, Tianjin and Shanghai. The art form is also preserved in Taiwan, where it is also known as Guójù. It has also spread to other regions such as the United States and Japan.
